KC-135 TANKER -- In-flight refueling: The probe and drogue configurations for use on the KC-135 TANKER were simulated in the Arnold Engineering Development Center's propulsion wind tunnel. A severe whipping motion of the hose was determined to be the cause of equipment failure in flight use of the system. This whipping was eliminated by the use of a vertical restraining cord suggested by contractor personnel.
