TITAN BUFFETING PHENOMENA STUDIED - Wind tunnel test of the Titan III and IV expendable launch vehicles at the Arnold Engineering Development Center have provided information that may be helpful in eliminating or controlling buffeting phenomena (instability) caused when the vehicles large payload fairings speed through the atmosphere. This test in the Center's 16-foot transonic wind tunnel was performed in 1988 to gather information on the much larger Titan IV payload fairings.
